St. Mary Magdalene: Apostle of the Resurrection
St. Mary Magdalene stands at the heart of the Easter narrative as the first witness to the Resurrection and the one commissioned to proclaim it. Known as the “Apostle to the Apostles,” she embodies faithful love, courageous witness, and transformative hope.
On Easter morning, Mary comes to the tomb while it is still dark, bearing spices and sorrow. But her grief turns to joy when she encounters the Risen Christ in the garden (John 20:1–18). Mistaking Him for the gardener, she hears Him speak her name—“Mary”—and in that moment, recognizes her Lord. This intimate exchange reveals the personal nature of resurrection faith: it begins with being known and called.
Christ then entrusts her with the message of new life: “Go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father…’” (John 20:17). Mary becomes the first preacher of the Resurrection, a role that affirms her spiritual authority and deepens her legacy as a model of evangelization.
In Eastern Christian tradition, Mary Magdalene is also associated with the red egg, a symbol of resurrection. According to legend, she presented an egg to Emperor Tiberius and proclaimed, “Christ is Risen!”—and the egg miraculously turned red, confirming her testimony.
Her Easter witness invites us to seek Christ in sorrow, recognize Him in love, and proclaim Him with boldness.
